Quikrete Fence Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide

Quikrete fence installation in Fresno typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a standard residential fence project using Quikrete fast-setting concrete for post setting. We stock Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix and Quikrete 5000 on the truck, and most fence installations are completed in one to three days depending on linear footage. The way most Fresno homeowners find out their fence installation failed is simple: they push on a post after a winter storm and it moves. Or the gate starts dragging because the post it hangs from has shifted out of plumb. In the Central Valley, where soil shifts between saturated winter clay and bone-dry summer hardpan, a fence is only as good as the concrete holding its posts.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

When we talk about Quikrete fence installation, we’re talking about the concrete side of the job, not a fence panel line. Quikrete makes the setting material, and the material choice matters more than most homeowners realize. For fence posts in Fresno, we use either Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix, which sets in 20 to 40 minutes and lets us hang fence panels the same day, or Quikrete 5000 High Early Strength for gate posts and corner posts that carry more load. The compatibility question is about your soil and your post type, not a Quikrete model number. Here’s the gotcha: Quikrete Fast-Setting Mix is designed to be poured dry into the hole and then watered. If you’re mixing it in a wheelbarrow first, you’re fighting the product, and we’ve seen homeowners end up with a lumpy, half-set pour that has to be dug out and redone. We also keep Quikrete All-Purpose Gravel on hand for drainage at the base of each post. In Fresno’s clay-heavy soil, skipping that gravel base is the most common reason posts heave within the first two winters.

Signs Your Quikrete Fence Installation Is Failing

  • The post wobbles when you push it with one hand. The concrete collar has cracked away from the post, usually because the hole was too narrow or the concrete was too wet when poured. A good post hole in Fresno clay is at least twice the post width and bell-shaped at the bottom.
  • The gate drags or won’t latch. The hinge post is leaning, which means the concrete footer under it was undersized for the gate’s weight. Gate posts need a deeper set and a stiffer mix than line posts.
  • Cracks running up from the base of the concrete collar. Water has gotten between the post and the concrete, and freeze-thaw or soil expansion has split the collar. In Fresno, the bigger culprit is clay expansion during winter rains.
  • The post is still straight but the fence line has a visible bow. Individual posts are fine, but the spacing is off or the footings settled unevenly because the hole depths weren’t consistent. We see this most often on DIY jobs where the digging got shallower as the afternoon wore on.
  • White chalky residue on the concrete above the soil line. Efflorescence, which means water is wicking through the concrete. It’s cosmetic, but it tells you the post base is sitting in chronically wet soil, and that wet soil is the same thing that will eventually heave the post.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Quikrete fence installation in Fresno runs $3,500 to $9,000 depending on linear footage, post depth, gate hardware, and access to the fence line. The lower end covers roughly 100 linear feet of basic wood privacy fence with Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete at every post. The upper end covers 200-plus feet with heavier gate hardware, corner bracing, and Quikrete 5000 under load-bearing posts. Every bid we write includes the concrete, gravel drainage base, post hardware, labor, and haul-away of the old fence if we’re replacing one. The number on the written estimate is the number you pay. We’re independent of Quikrete and don’t mark up materials past what we pay. What drives the cost most in Fresno is post depth. We set posts 24 to 30 inches below grade because the clay expands and contracts that aggressively here. Many older fences in Fresno were set at 18 inches, which is exactly why they’re leaning now. Our work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a post shifts or a gate goes out of square inside the first year, we come back and correct it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a wobbly post yourself. Push on it. Look at the concrete collar. If you see cracks or a gap between post and concrete, that’s a failed set, and adding more concrete on top won’t fix it. The old collar has to come out. Here’s where DIY goes wrong: digging out a set post in Fresno clay is hard, slow work, and the temptation is to cut corners on the new hole. We’ve followed behind do-it-yourselfers who dug 14-inch holes in August when the clay was like rock, and those posts leaned by March. The other common mistake is using the wrong mix for gate posts. Quikrete Fast-Setting is fine for line posts, but a heavy gate needs the higher early strength of Quikrete 5000 or a properly proportioned wet pour. If your gate post is the one that’s failed, call us at (559) 785-2712. The labor to redo a gate post correctly costs less than buying a new gate after it sags out of square.
