American Standard Home Additions & ADU: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
Home additions and ADU construction in Fresno typically run $45,000 – $130,000 for a full build, and when a homeowner calls us about an American Standard fixture or system inside that new square footage, the conversation is usually about matching existing plumbing rough-ins, valve specs, or finish trim to what’s already on the wall. Bradford Remodeling Co Fresno isn’t affiliated with American Standard, but our crews work with American Standard products every week, and we can source, match, and install the right component for your addition or ADU, usually within the same week. The most common way Fresno owners discover a problem is mid-project: they’re adding a bathroom or kitchenette, the plumber opens the wall, and the existing American Standard valve or drain assembly doesn’t line up with the new layout. Or the fixture itself is fine but the rough-in depth is wrong for the new substrate, and suddenly a $300 part becomes a $3,000 correction if it’s not caught early.

Which American Standard Models This Applies To
American Standard builds across several product lines, and the compatibility issue is rarely the fixture name on the box. It’s the rough-in spec behind the wall. Here’s what we check on every Fresno addition or ADU where American Standard is involved:
- Valve series and build date. American Standard has produced pressure-balancing valves under the Aqua-Fill, R470, R510, and more recent FloWise and Cadet identifiers. A valve body from 2004 and a trim kit from 2024 often will not marry up, even if both say American Standard on the packaging. The rough-in depth also shifts between generations, which matters when new tile changes the wall thickness by a quarter inch.
- Drain assembly spec. Tub and shower drains have different thread pitches and collar depths depending on the series. An American Standard tub from the Cambridge line won’t necessarily accept a drain kit spec’d for a Princeton model. We match by measuring the drain shoe, not by trusting the model name.
- Finish trim and cartridge compatibility. Cartridges fail faster than valve bodies, especially in Fresno’s hard water. The cartridge number stamped on the side of the old part is the only reliable way to order a match. Guessing by “it looks the same” fails often enough that we don’t do it.
- OEM versus quality aftermarket. We install OEM American Standard parts when the trim is visible and the homeowner wants factory finish consistency. For cartridge and valve internals, we sometimes use Danco or other aftermarket equivalents that match the OEM spec and carry a similar lifespan. We’ll show you both prices before you decide. American Standard cadet and Colony models are the two lines we see most often in older Fresno homes, and both have their own gotchas, which we cover in the walkthrough.

Signs Your American Standard Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
Most of what goes wrong with American Standard fixtures inside additions and ADUs shows up as one of these five symptoms:
- Water temperature spikes when a toilet flushes or a washing machine cycles. The pressure-balancing cartridge is worn or scaled. In Fresno, hard water calcification shortens cartridge life to 3 – 5 years in some neighborhoods, especially north of Herndon where the mineral content runs high.
- A slow drip from the tub spout or showerhead that won’t seal. The cartridge seats are worn, or the valve body has a scored internal surface. Replacing the cartridge fixes it about 80% of the time. The other 20% is a valve body replacement, which is a bigger job in an ADU because the access panel may not exist yet.
- Drain odors in the new bathroom, even after cleaning. The drain assembly wasn’t tied into the vent stack correctly during the addition’s rough-in, or the p-trap is too shallow for the run. This is an installation problem, not an American Standard defect, but it surfaces at the fixture and the fix often means opening the wall behind the drain.
- Water pooling around the base of the toilet or tub in a newly built ADU. The closet flange was set too high or too low for the finished floor height, usually because the flooring thickness changed mid-project. Fresno’s concrete slab ADUs are prone to this when the slab pour and the finish floor spec get out of sync.
- Low flow from the showerhead or tub filler in the new addition. The valve was installed at the wrong depth relative to the finished wall, or debris from the rough-in got lodged in the cartridge screen. American Standard valves have inlet screens that clog with solder flux and drywall dust if the system wasn’t flushed before trim-out.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fresno, the installed cost to replace or correct an American Standard component in a home addition or ADU depends on whether we’re working at the trim level or inside the wall. A cartridge swap runs $180 – $400 including the part and the trip. Rebuilding a valve body or replacing a tub/shower assembly runs $800 – $2,500 depending on access and whether tile or drywall has to be opened and patched. If the drain rough-in is wrong and the slab or wall has to be opened, the work can push into the $3,000 – $6,000 range, which is why we tell addition and ADU clients to get the rough-in inspected before the finishes go up.
| Work Scope | Typical Fresno Installed Range |
|---|---|
| American Standard cartridge replacement | $180 – $400 |
| Valve body rebuild or replacement | $800 – $2,500 |
| Drain assembly correction (accessible) | $400 – $1,200 |
| Rough-in correction with slab/wall access | $3,000 – $6,000 |
| Full home addition or ADU fixture scope | $45,000 – $130,000 |
Every one of these numbers gets written down before any work starts. No change orders with a blank number at the bottom. And every completed repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails inside that year, we’re back at no charge. You get that in writing before we open a single wall.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Remove the showerhead and check the inlet screen for debris. Confirm the hot and cold supply stops are fully open. Note whether the handle turns smoothly or feels gritty. Those notes save a service call. What you shouldn’t do is attempt a cartridge replacement on a valve you can’t identify, or open the wall behind an ADU shower to chase a drain line. A mis-set valve depth that gets re-buried behind new tile is a much more expensive correction later, and on an ADU with a shared wall, cutting into the wrong stud cavity can hit electrical or a vent stack. For anything inside the wall or behind the valve, call (559) 785-2712 and let us open it once, correctly.
FAQs

Expect 3 to 7 years in most Fresno neighborhoods, depending on water hardness and whether a softener is in line. In Northwest Fresno and parts of Clovis, we’ve pulled cartridges at 3 years that were heavily scaled. In softer pockets of the city, 6 to 7 years is common. If you’re replacing the same cartridge every 18 months, the problem is likely a worn valve body, not the cartridge.
Yes, in most cases. If the valve body is clean and the seats aren’t scored, a cartridge and trim kit brings it back to factory function for $180 – $400. If the internal surfaces are worn, rebuilding buys you time but not certainty. We’ll show you the inside of the valve before recommending one over the other. Call (559) 785-2712 for an inspection and a written quote.
A cartridge replacement is usually done in under an hour. A valve rebuild or assembly replacement typically runs a half day to a full day, depending on access. If we have to open and patch a wall, add a day for drywall and paint to cure properly. We schedule the work and tell you the finish date before we start.
We keep common American Standard cartridges, trim kits, and drain assemblies on the truck for the model lines we see most in Central California. Specialty or discontinued pieces may take a few days to source. We’ll give you the lead time and the exact price before you commit, and the written estimate says exactly what we’re installing.
