Kohler Driveway & Pavers: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Kohler-compatible driveway and paver components throughout Fresno, with typical installed work running $3,500 to $18,000 depending on scope, material grade, and substrate condition. Most Fresno homeowners discover a problem the same way: a paver shifts underfoot, a drain channel separates from the slab, or water stops moving away from the foundation after a hard rain. That’s when the part number matters, because Kohler’s hardscape line uses specific channel widths and joint tolerances that generic big-box replacements don’t always match.

We’re an independent contractor, not a Kohler affiliate. But we’ve installed enough Kohler-spec drainage channels, paver edge restraints, and permeable joint systems across Fresno neighborhoods to know exactly which parts hold up to our clay soil and 100-degree summers, and which ones don’t.
Which Kohler Models This Applies To

Kohler’s hardscape and drainage line covers three main product families that show up on Fresno driveways and paver patios: the K-9130 series channel drains, the K-9170 paver edge restraints, and the K-9200 permeable paver grid systems. Each family uses its own connection geometry, so a K-9130 end cap won’t seat on a K-9170 track, period. That’s the compatibility gotcha we see most often: homeowners buy a channel grate based on width alone, then find the locking tabs are 3mm off.
To identify your part, look for the stamped K-number on the underside of the grate, the inside face of an end cap, or the top edge of an edge restraint. If the stamp is worn, measure the channel throat width in millimeters with a tape; Kohler runs 100mm, 150mm, and 200mm throats, and that measurement plus the locking tab style is usually enough for us to match it. For OEM versus aftermarket: Kohler OEM grates and channels carry the full manufacturer spec and seat perfectly. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist for simple grate replacements and save 20-30%, but we won’t install an aftermarket channel body under a load-bearing driveway edge in Fresno’s expansive clay, because the wall thickness and UV stabilizers matter when the ground moves and the sun beats down. We’ll tell you which part category can safely go aftermarket and which should stay OEM, on the first call.

Signs Your Kohler Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Paver shift or rocking underfoot. Fresno’s clay soil expands and contracts with seasonal moisture, and when the Kohler edge restraint loses its stake grip, the outside pavers start to drift. The fix is usually new restraint sections and re-compacted base, not a full re-lay.
- Standing water against the garage slab. A Kohler K-9130 channel that’s separated from the concrete or silted solid won’t move water. In Fresno’s winter rain bursts, that water backs up and finds the slab joint. The channel body or the grate has usually failed.
- Sand or joint material washing out between pavers. Kohler’s permeable joint systems are designed to hold their fill. When you see sand gone after every rain, the grid cells have cracked or the fabric has torn, and water is now eroding the base course under the pavers.
- Grate rattles or lifts when driven over. The locking tabs on the grate have worn or the channel body has warped from heat cycling. In Fresno’s summer, surface temperatures on a dark paver driveway hit 140°F plus, and a warped channel body will never hold a grate tight again.
- Visible crack running from a drain channel into the paver field. That’s a structural symptom: the channel’s base has moved and is now telegraphing stress into the surrounding pavers. Patching the crack won’t fix it. The channel body and the base under it have to come out.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Our installed Kohler driveway and paver work in Fresno runs within these ranges, and we put the number in writing before the first tool comes out:
- Paver driveway installation (full): $7,000 – $18,000
- Paver patio installation (full): $3,500 – $11,000
- Driveway replacement (existing tear-out and re-lay): $5,000 – $14,000
- Drain channel or edge restraint repair (spot replacement): priced per linear foot, written out line by line on the estimate
What moves the number: how much of the old base course is still sound, how many linear feet of Kohler channel needs replacement, whether we’re reusing existing pavers or laying new, and access for equipment. Fresno’s clay means we won’t put new pavers over a failed base, so if the base is shot, that’s in the price. Every job includes the part, the labor, the base prep, and our written 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. The estimate says what we build, and we build what the estimate says.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re confident the problem is just a cracked grate on a K-9130 channel, you can measure the throat width, check the K-number, and swap it yourself; it’s a drop-in part and doesn’t require disturbing the base. Same for a separated end cap. Where DIY goes wrong fast is anything below the surface: pulling pavers to get at a failed base course, resetting edge restraints that have pulled out of the ground, or re-bedding a channel body. Do that wrong in Fresno, and six months later you’ve got the same paver shifted again, but now you’ve also got a loose channel that catches tires. We’ve been called to enough of those. If the symptom is structural, call us at (559) 785-2712 and we’ll get a straight answer in front of you.
FAQs

Kohler K-9130 channel bodies typically last 15 – 20 years in Fresno when the base under them stays stable; grates last 10 – 15 years depending on traffic weight and sun exposure, and the edge restraints usually need re-staking or replacement at the 8 – 12 year mark. Call (559) 785-2712 and we’ll tell you what you’re actually looking at, for your specific driveway.
A hairline crack in a grate can sometimes be stabilized, but a cracked channel body cannot be reliably repaired, because the water it’s supposed to move will keep finding the crack and eroding the base. Replacement is usually the honest call, and we’ll show you the crack and explain it before we touch anything.
A drain channel or edge restraint swap is usually a half-day to a full day on site; a full paver driveway re-lay in Fresno typically runs three to five working days depending on size, access, and how much base course needs rebuilding. We’ll put the timeline in writing on the estimate.
We keep the most common Kohler K-9130 grates, end caps, and edge restraint sections on the truck for Fresno jobs, and we can source full channel bodies and grid systems same-week from our supplier. If you give us the K-number and a measurement from your existing part, we’ll confirm stock before we schedule.
